InfoScott Maddox's roots run deep in hard work and service to our state. An entrepreneur since his earliest years when he would buy, fix and re-sell items from his neighbors, Scott Maddox has exemplified vision and enthusiasm and a desire for public service from an early age.

Scott Maddox learned his unparalleled work ethic from his grandparents, Earl and Irene D'azevedo, immigrants who settled in Hialeah, Florida to find work in the early 1940s. Earl D'azevedo labored throughout his life as an ice deliveryman, dump truck driver, even running a pony rink for children.

Family

Scott Maddox's father, Charles, was similarly driven. An Airborne Ranger in the Korean War, he later continued his public service as a Metro Dade police officer. There, he met Scott Maddox's mother, Claire, who also served as a Metro Dade police officer. She later became a special education elementary school teacher in Dade County, where she continues to teach today.

Scott Maddox knew he wanted to be involved in public service in Florida. In 1987, he served as the president of the Capital City Jaycees. During his tenure, he was named a top president in the nation and the Capital City chapter was named the number one growth chapter in America. This, plus plain, old-fashioned "grass-roots lobbying", earned him a top spot over influential Tallahassee insiders as the youngest elected delegate from Florida to the 1988 Democratic National Convention where he supported Al Gore for President.

After obtaining a bachelors of science degree in political science and public administration from Florida State University, Scott Maddox graduated from Florida State College of Law where he served as a member of an award-winning Moot Court team. While still in law school in 1993, Scott Maddox, then 24, was elected the youngest City Commissioner in Tallahassee's history.

Mayor

A year later, in 1994, his fellow commissioners elected him Mayor pro-tempore, and in 1995 they elected him mayor. In 1996, the citizens of Tallahassee passed a referendum calling for a new "leadership" mayor directly elected by the residents to serve a four year term. Tallahassee citizens then elected Scott Maddox as Tallahassee's first leadership mayor in February 1997.

As Mayor of Tallahassee, Scott Maddox has taken bold leadership steps such as unveiling the Mayor's Initiative on Race Relations, attracting three new air carriers to Tallahassee regional airport, bringing a Challenger Learning Center/IMAX theater to Tallahassee's downtown, instituting an open-door policy in his office and leading Tallahassee to win the All America City award.

President, Florida League of Cities

Continuing his exemplary leadership role, Mayor Maddox was sworn in as President of the Florida League of Cities in August 2000. When accepting the position, Scott Maddox underscored the importance of knowing constituents' concerns firsthand in order to lobby effectively for them. So he kicked off a statewide tour of Florida in Monticello that very month. When he visited Lake Buena Vista in August 2001 to hand over the gavel and presidency at the Florida League of Cities 75th Annual Conference, he had visited every one of Florida's 405 cities.

A native Floridian, Scott Maddox is committed to the long-term viability of our state. He and his wife, Sha, have two sons, Jack and Denver. He is a member of Leadership Florida Class XX and his hobbies include spending time with his family, reading and taking an occasional spin on his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
