1941-45 Immediately following Pearl Harbor he insisted on being recalled to active duty. Promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in August, 1942. He was wounded while commanding the Buna Task Force in New Guinea. After a lengthy recuperation he was given command of the 158th Regimental Combat
Team (Bushmasters) and assigned the task of clearing the vital Bicol Peninsula.

1947-51 Commanding General, 103rd Infantry Division (OR). Promoted to Maj. General on March 31, 1949 and retired as a Major General (USAR) on September 30, 1951.

1952 Approached to accept a cabinet post in the Eisenhower administration, but declined

1956 Advanced to rank of Lt. General on the retired list

1968 February 18 Died while on vacation, in Sarasota, Florida
