Born in Albany NY, 10/30/1829, son of Alfred Conkling. His older brother Frederick A. Conkling was also a well-known politician.

Moved with his parents to Auburn, N.Y., in 1839; completed an academic course; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced practice in Utica, N.Y.

District attorney (W-Oneida County) 1850-1858

Mayor (R-Utica) 1858-1859

U.S. Representative (R-NY) 1859-1863, defeated for re-election in 1862. Chairman, Committee on District of Columbia (Thirty-seventh Congress)

U.S. Representative (R-NY) 1865-1867. As a prominent member of the Radical Republicans and opponents of Pres. Johnson's Reconstruction policy, Conkling was elected to the U.S. Senate by the New York legislature

U.S. Senator (R-NY) 1867-1881. Chairman, Committee on Revision of the Laws of the United States (Fortieth through Forty-third Congresses), Committee on Commerce (Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth, and Forty-seventh Congresses), Committee on Engrossed Bills (Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses). Resigned from office on 5/16/1881 to protest Pres. Garfield's appointments in New York State. Conkling was an unsuccesssful candidate to fill his own vacancy.

Leader of the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party in the latter half of the Hayes administration and supported President Grant at the 1880 Republican National Convention

Resumed the practice of law in New York City

Declined to accept a nomination to the United States Supreme Court in 1882

Died in New York City, at 1:50 a.m., 4/18/1888; interment in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica, N.Y.
