He was re-elected to the Minnesota Senate from the 42nd District in 1950 and 1954.

Anderson was governor of Minnesota from 1961-1963, the last Governor of the state to serve a 2-year term. He narrowly lost re-election in 1962. He also sought the GOP nomination for Governor at the 1966 convention, but he withdrew after about the 13th ballot.
