Info | Nancy Rodkin Rotering was elected Mayor of the City of Highland Park in April 2011. She has a passion for her hometown and its issues, as a resident, parent, community volunteer and advocate, City Council member and now as Mayor.
Her commitment to serving the City is evident in her civic, professional and community experience. Nancy is an attorney who has spent many years working on a broad range of commissions, boards, and committees serving on behalf of our City, our schools, our Park District and Moraine Township.
Her work in the community has been recognized. She was sought out by Lake County Board member Anne Flanigan Bassi to be a member of the Lake County Water Supply Advisory Committee. She is an ex officio board member of the Community Family Center and was awarded the 2006 Robert Barnard Pillar Award by the Highland Park Human Relations Commission for her work on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and as the founder of the Environmental Education Program (EEP) for North Shore District 112 Schools.
Prior to running for the Mayor’s office, Rotering served as Highland Park City Councilman from 2009-2011. She served as the Liaison to the City’s Design Review, Traffic and Historic Preservation Commissions. She worked hard to protect accessibility to public land, promote transit and preserve the history of our community.
Nancy’s dedication to public service began in 2005 when the Mayor appointed her as a member of the Environmental Commission and a year later to the Plan Commission. She was also a member of the advisory board for the Park District of Highland Park’s lakefront activities and Heller Nature Center, and served as Braeside School PTO Co-President.
As an attorney and businesswoman, Nancy began her career as a member of the Treasurer’s staff at General Motors Corporation. She joined McDermott, Will & Emery as an attorney working on health care matters involving corporate transactions, taxation, real estate and regulation. In 2008, Nancy shifted her focus to government work and served as a Legislative Aide to State Representative Karen May.
Nancy is an active member of Highland Park/Highwood Rotary, Ravinia Festival Women’s Board and Annual Fund Committee, Children’s Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs (JACPAC), Hadassah and the Highland Park/Highwood League of Women Voters.
Nancy grew up in Highland Park and is a graduate of Highland Park public schools. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Stanford University, an MBA at Northwestern University and a law degree at the University of Chicago. She and her husband Rob returned to Highland Park and are raising their four boys here.
