InfoSusan Combs, a fourth-generation rancher, was sworn into office in 1999 as the state's 10th Commissioner of Agriculture and is the first woman to hold this position in the state's history.

Susan has a cow-calf operation on her family's 120-year-old ranch in Brewster County.

Susan received her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and was an assistant district attorney in Dallas. She served in the Texas Legislature from 1993 to 1996, writing the state's major private property rights legislation, and she cosponsored George W. Bush�s juvenile justice reform legislation. In 1996, she joined the staff of United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison as the senator's state director.

Susan is on the Board at Saint Mary's Hall, a private parochial school, and currently serves on the boards of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, the Texas Wildlife Association, Texas Natural Resources Foundation and on the national advisory board for Texas Wild!. She is a member of the Texas Farm Bureau and Independent Cattlemen�s Association of Texas and is the Chairman of the Texas State Fair Heritage Hall of Honor Committee and Director of the Star of Texas Rodeo. She has also served on the Texas Beef Council and the Texas Production Credit Association. She was recently appointed by the Governor to the Southern States Biobased Alliance.

In January 2002, Susan was named Leader of the Year in Texas Agriculture for 2002, by Progressive Farmer, a national agriculture publication. In April 2001, Susan received the Texas Dietetic Association�s Bluebonnet Awards for her dedication to nutrition. Susan also received Texas Tech University�s Gerald Thomas Outstanding Agriculturist Award, which honors those who have made significant contributions to agriculture in November 2000.

Susan has received support from every major farm and ranch group for the general election.

Along with her three sons, Susan and her husband of 27 years live in Austin, where he started a successful high-tech company.
