I was born and raised in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, where my father worked for John Deere and my mother was a special education teacher. Along with two brothers, we were part of a proud middle class, and were instilled with the values of hard work, education, equal rights and compassion for others. With work study programs, affordable loans and a scholarship I went on to graduate from Northwestern University and then for over 20 years forged a career in the entertainment industry, living in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
When in Los Angeles, I also pursued another lifelong dream and opened a restaurant while continuing to work in television. I learned, first hand, the challenges of operating a business and I also experienced, first hand, the betrayal of economic policies that valued corporate interests over the success of small businesses.
In 2003, I left Los Angeles to come back to the Cedar Valley. I came back for “Iowa Values” and now I see many of those values being marginalized, even eliminated, and I have to do something about it. I have to so that my sons can have the opportunities that I had….and more.
