InfoJudge Roger Monroe has extensive court experience that will serve him well on the highest court in the state.

In 1990 he was elected as a circuit judge in Birmingham, and then was elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in 1994, where he served until 2000.

“As a circuit judge in Jefferson County, I handled thousands of jury trials. As an appellate judge on the Court of Civil Appeals, I decided hundreds of cases. Each time I rendered an opinion consistent with the law,” Monroe said.

Roger Monroe understands that judges are there to rule on law, not to make law.

“My record in both trial and the appellate court was that of a strict constructionist,” he said, explaining that a judge’s foremost responsibility is to understand and clarify the law, not to impose new meaning into it and thereby make new law from the bench. “When I am elected to the Supreme Court, I will continue to strictly and consistently apply the law to each case.”

Monroe grew up in DeKalb County, where he attended public schools, and then went to the University of Alabama and the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, where he received his law degree.
“I was born and raised a southern conservative and continue to be guided by the principles of my upbringing in DeKalb County,” said Monroe.

Monroe is a member of the Alabama State Bar and Tennessee State Bar and has served on various judicial committees, including the Ethics Committee, and the Medical Liaison Committee.

He has been married 31 years to his wife Donna, and is active in his church and the American Legion.
