Info | John P. Hand was born on November 10, 1850, in Henry County, Illinois. He received his A.B. at Iowa State University in 1872. He served as County Judge for Henry County from 1885 - 1890, and then as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 1890 - 1894. On June 4, 1900 he became a member of the Illinois Supreme Court, where he remained until his resignation on July 16, 1913. During his tenure on the court he served twice as chief justice, in 1903, and again in 1907. Judge Hand died on May 22, 1923 in Cambridge.
