Info | Sabino “Pio” Renteria is a father, community activist, and a lifetime citizen of City Council District 3 — a true civic leader. Pio grew up here, and he grew up poor. He was shining shoes and selling newspapers on Congress Avenue by age seven. At 15, Pio picked cotton and pecans to just help his family get by.
It was from this backdrop, that he began his life-long dedication to community service in District 3. His tireless work on issues of public safety earned him the support of the Austin Police Association, Austin EMS, and the Austin Firefighters Association. His advocacy of workers rights has earned him the endorsement of the Central Labor Council and the Workers Defense Project. His leadership on affordability earned him the support of the Central Austin Democrats, the Austin Young Democrats, and every other Democratic club that has endorsed in the race.
Pio has earned the support of these great community organizations because of his record of service to the city, and in particular, East Austin and District 3.
Pio has given more than 30 years of service on City of Austin boards, commissions, and task groups. He currently serves on the East Austin Neighborhood Center Advisory Board and is treasurer for the AB Cantu/Pan Am Recreation Center Advisory Board. He has also served on the Environmental Board, and participated for 14 years on the Community Development Commission, eight years as its chair.
He is a leader with United East Austin Coalition, Friends of the MACC, East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Planning Team (currently vice-chair), and has volunteered with Sanchez, Martin and Austin High PTAs and CACs.
Pio is exactly the kind of experienced consensus builder District 3 needs in City Council. With Pio’s leadership, District 3 will move forward with an effective and serious advocate who will never forget where he came from.
