InfoWhy do we continue to see Republicans moving to the left?
My name is Raymond Garcia, and I am running for the Colorado State House of Representatives in District 21. I come from a Colorado Pioneer family with Native American roots. I am a solid Conservative Republican, a US Marine, a Christian, a father, a husband, and a son. Which means my love for Colorado is DEEP!

I have run for the Colorado State House twice before, both times in a VERY Democratic district in Denver. I knew full well that there was only a slim chance of winning the seat while running as a Republican, much less a solid conservative Republican. But I knew we still needed someone to step up and give it the best shot he could, if for nothing else than to give the people a choice and a voice.

While running for the Colorado State House in 2014 and 2016, the two things I heard most from the people to whom I spoke were:

You don't stand a chance running as a Republican in Denver.
You need to move more to the left (or center) to appeal to more voters.
I was quite surprised to hear this, not only from the Democrats to whom I was speaking, but from the Republicans as well. It made no sense to me. WHY would a Republican want me to move more to the left? I could understand why a Democrat would want me to do so. After all, if they convince the Republicans to adapt to their policies, then they win either way. But why are the Republicans buying into this notion? All this accomplishes is the country being pushed further and further to the left, regardless of how the people vote. We never hear liberals telling Democrats that they need to move more to the right to "appeal to more voters," now do we? Why do you suppose that is?

Whenever I received a request to "move further to the left," I would always respond with this:
"I am NOT giving the voters another Democrat for whom to vote. I am giving them a solid, principled, conservative Republican. They already have a Democrat for whom to vote. If that is what they want, then that is their choice. Why then would I want to give them the choice of Democrat or "Democrat lite?" I want to give the voters a real choice!"

Even in Denver, the voters seemed to like this idea! They seemed to be yearning for someone who would actually stand up for what he believes in, someone who would not just tell them what they want to hear to get into office, only to turn his back on them and vote against the issues for which he campaigned. They may not have liked what I believed in, but they knew I was not going to massage their political beliefs just to get their vote and then forget them when I got into office. I was going to tell them exactly what I was going to do, and then do it. At least they knew what they were getting, and I was able to pull 40% of the vote in a Democratic district that had 3 registered Democratic voters for every single Republican voter.

And boooooy did the media come after me for that! I was called a sexist, racist, homophobe, etc. I was vilified ruthlessly for simply standing up for conservative principles. But as I told my 10 year-old daughter when she cried to me about someone calling her a name, "If they call you a giraffe, does that make your neck any longer?"

This is exactly why I am running for the Colorado State House in District 21. I feel that we need to have a candidate who will stand up for solid conservative principles, even when that means difficult votes have to be made. We cannot afford to give up on our principles for even one vote, no matter how difficult that vote might be. We have way too many people in Congress who tell us one thing while campaigning, but the longer they sit in office, the further left they move.

I know this position will not make me the most popular person in the Republican party. But I'm totally OK with that. I would much rather have a true enemy than a false friend. You will always know where I stand, and you can always trust that what you see is exactly what you get with me. I can think of nothing more egregious than politicians who put forth platitudes during the campaign season and then give us excuses as to why they voted against us.

Please vote for me, and I give you my word to always fight for your Conservative Values.
