InfoOn July 19, 2002, Wayne Hogan officially entered the race to represent Florida's new Seventh District in the United States House of Representatives.

Hogan, 55, is a lifelong Floridian who grew up in St. Johns County. A graduate of St. Augustine High School and St. Johns River Community College, he received his B.A. in Economics from Florida State University and received his J.D. from the FSU College of Law.

Wayne Hogan is a partner in the Jacksonville law firm of Brown, Terrell, Hogan, Ellis, McClamma, Yegelwel. Best known for his role in Florida’s landmark victory against Big Tobacco, Hogan has spent his career representing regular families against powerful interests. The settlement against the tobacco companies severely restricted cigarette advertising near schools and playgrounds and eliminated ads with cartoon characters such as Joe Camel. This landmark legal success recovered more than $17 billion for Florida’s taxpayers, families, and children. Wayne Hogan is an American success story. The son of the late Jack Hogan, a telephone company switchman, and Mickie Hogan, a billing clerk for the Florida National Guard, Wayne watched his parents work hard to make ends meet. As a young boy, his father’s union was forced to strike after intractable negotiations with the old monopoly phone company. Early memories of this event helped shape Wayne’s view that working people, who earn an hourly wage and play by the rules, ought to be treated fairly, and no one should suffer at the hands of corporations who break the rules.

With examples of corporate greed becoming more and more familiar, threats to Social Security becoming more grave, and the obvious need to improve public education, Wayne Hogan’s record of fighting for Florida’s working families provides the sort of leadership Florida and America need in Congress. In addition to his commitment to equal justice for all, Wayne Hogan is dedicated to enhancing Florida’s education system. Working with his alma mater, Florida State University, Hogan has helped to create programs for minority and disadvantaged students at FSU’s College of Law and supported a program to teach Florida State athletes skills for life off the playing field. In addition, Hogan created scholarships for St. Johns County public high school graduates and St. Johns River Community College students that allow them to attend any public university in the state of Florida.

Wayne works closely with the people and businesses in his community. He is a Chamber of Commerce Trustee and is the former President of the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, and the founding chair of its environmental law section. Wayne is the past President of the FSU College of Law Alumni Association, and was recently awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, which recognizes "a career of leadership; a career of example setting; a career of devotion; a career of courage."

Wayne and his wife of 25 years, Pat Hogan, a registered Nurse, and Licensed Mental Health Counselor, were recently recognized as "champions of mental health" by the Mental Health Association of Northeast Florida for their contributions to the community.
