InfoBiography:

Gloria Schor Andersen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and settled in the Chicago area nearly a decade ago after moving around the country because of her husband's career.

Andersen graduated from H. Frank Carey Junior-Senior High School in Franklin Square, N.Y. She earned her bachelor's degree in secondary social studies from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1972, and later completed a master's degree in history at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y.

She has been a teacher since 1973, but took about a decade off in the 1980s to raise her two children.

Andersen landed her first teaching job in 1973 at Farmingdale High School in Farmingdale, N.Y. She has since taught in public and Hebrew schools in Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio and Illinois.

In 1978, she worked for the former federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare as a child development program specialist, overseeing Head Start grants for Tennessee and Kentucky.

Between teaching jobs, she also worked briefly in sales for an Atlanta garbage service firm, where her clients included Ted Turner Enterprises.

Since moving to the Chicago area in 1995, she has taught American government in summer school in Naperville for six years and also works as a substitute teacher.

In 1979, she married Scott R. Andersen, who works in marketing, primarily for the tool industry. They have two children.
