Since I am not a public figure, I must give you some personal background so you will understand my perspective. I grew up in Peoria, IL, raised for the most part by my widowed Grandmother. We never had any money but we didn't consider ourselves to be poor, only broke all the time. All of my spending money came from work. Not counting washing cars, cutting grass, and carrying papers, my first job was as a car hop in a drive-in at the age of 12. As soon as the owner learned of my true age after about 3 weeks, he fired me, but being undeterred I found others. Between then and my work permit age of 14, I must have held a dozen jobs. Out of necessity, my Grandmother let me work but she cut me no slack on school. I was the first in my family to finish high school (her goal) and college (my goal). This basically uneducated woman instilled in me a sense of independence and a firm belief that if you worked hard enough you can accomplish anything. I have since learned that you also need education and opportunity.
An immigrant herself, she taught me to love this country. In my youth, I was taught that if you truly care about America, you do not try to hide or deny its problems, but face them squarely and deal with them honestly. Like a good parent, you do not excuse short comings, you correct them.
My grandmother died when I was a senior in high school and with the help of my aunt I was able to stay in school through graduation. Immediately thereafter I joined the Navy. In the course of my nine years of naval service, I served around the world on ships large and small; including duty on an aircraft carrier off China, on a tanker in the Persian Gulf during the Suez crises, and later on as a nuclear tech on a missile submarine.
During this time I also met and married my wife Sharon who is the center of my life, my constant helper and supporter, and my most severe critic over the 47 years that have followed. We have three adult children. My two sons live in St. Petersburg and my daughter lives in Chicago.
After leaving the Navy, I worked as a nuclear technician and went to school, graduating from the University of Virginia with honors. In my career since then I have been a CPA, a bank Chief Financial Officer, an S & L Managing Agent, and a small business owner.
