| Info | Appointed by Sheriff William L. Polhemus in December of 2011, previously served as Undersheriff for Sheriff Polhemus from 1989 to 2000, William T. Sommeling became Acting Sheriff as of December 14, 2012.
Acting Sheriff Sommeling is the executive officer in charge of administration and conducts Sheriff Sales on foreclosed properties in Ocean County. Table of Organization
Acting Sheriff Sommeling is a lifelong resident of Ocean County. He grew up in Toms River where he attended Saint Joseph’s and Toms River schools. He served in the National Guard and the United States Marine Corps Reserves in which he was both honorably discharged.
In 1958 he served the Seaside Heights Police Department as a patrolman after completing his basic training at the New Jersey State Police Academy in Sea Girt with the 60th Municipal Police class. He also served as an investigator, undercover agent and was promoted to Sergeant in 1965.
In 1967 he joined the Toms River Police Department where he served as an undercover narcotics agent. In 1971 he became a detective and was promoted to Sergeant in 1977. He was the first deputy director of the Ocean County Narcotics Task Force and was assigned to the Prosecutor’s Office during that period.
While working as a municipal police officer he completed a program in Police Science and Administration at Temple University. He also received an Associate’s degree from Ocean County College, a Bachelor’s degree from the College of New Jersey in 1972 and a Master’s degree from Rider University. He completed postgraduate courses at Cornell University and the University of Virginia. He is a graduate of the 108th class of the FBI National Academy and of the National Sheriff’s Institute. He has attended and completed numerous law enforcement related courses offered by the state and national law enforcement agencies.
Prior to being appointed Undersheriff in 2011, Acting Sheriff Sommeling served as a Commissioner and Hearing Examiner for the New Jersey State Casino Control Commission for ten years; two years as Vice Chair of the agency.
Acting Sheriff Sommeling is a life member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Sheriff’s Association of New Jersey, National Sheriff’s Association, a member of the New Jersey State PBA; Local 600, a life member of the New Jersey State PBA; Local 137, Police Superior Officer’s Association, American Society of Industrial Security and the FBI National Academy Association.
