Info | Prior to his service on the Governor’s Council (also called the Executive Council), Mr. Callahan served on the state Racing Commission, was a legislative aide in the state Senate, and worked for more than three decades on the Consumer Advisory Commission, a local agency that he began in his native Medford, which serves that city and six surrounding communities, mediating consumer complaints.
Mr. Callahan was “the confirmed bachelor,’’ said Sampson, who is one of seven surviving siblings.
“He was dedicated to his work, and you can’t be married to two different worlds,’’ she said. “No woman would put up with that.’’
Governor’s Council clerk George F. Cronin of West Roxbury knew Mr. Callahan for 40 years.
“He was an extremely thoughtful and caring individual, who made a ton of friends and made friends easily,’’ Cronin said, citing Mr. Callahan’s campaign literature, which always stated: “He Helps People.’’
Sampson, a Wilmington resident, said her brother’s focus on people began as a boy with a neighborhood paper route in Medford. “Even as a boy on the route, he would stop and visit with elderly and sick people,’’ she recalled.
He was also dedicated to his family. “He was the big brother who took me sledding, he walked me down the aisle; and to my children, he was the grandfather.’’
When his mother developed Alzheimer’s disease, Mr. Callahan made her his top priority, caring for her until she died in 2003.
