InfoJarrett Barrios works for Massachusetts as the State Senator for Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Charlestown, and parts of Revere, Allston-Brighton, Saugus and Somerville, focusing on housing, childcare, schools and healthcare access.

The son of a carpenter and a social worker, he came to Cambridge at the age of 17 to study at Harvard College. After graduating with high honors, and working for the Boston City Council and in local campaigns, he obtained his law degree with honors from Georgetown. While in law school, he wrote for The Tax Lawyer, worked in the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection and won both the written and oral portions of the school's annual moot competition--the first student in Georgetown history to achieve this feat.

Coming back to Cambridge, he practiced law at the firm of Hill & Barlow where he was awarded the "Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year" in 1997. First elected in 1998 to the State House of Representatives, he was elected to the State Senate in 2002.

As a state representative, he led successful efforts to create a state low income housing tax credit, Massachusetts' first new affordable housing production program in over a decade, as well as to create a state affordable housing trust. He passed legislation to require interpreter services in hospital emergency rooms, and to improve benefits to widows of disabled veterans.

Senator Barrios is sponsoring legislation currently to protect consumers from unfair bank fees and lending practices, raise the wage of human service workers and decrease the disparities in disease outcomes for uninsured Massachusetts residents. He is Chair of the Committee on Public Safety and Vice-Chair on Committee of Health Care. Senator Barrios also sits on the Committees of Human Services and Third Reading, and is a founding member of the Latino American Caucus.

He was elected to the Democratic State Committee in 1998. In 2001, he was named Policy Chair for the Massachusetts Democratic Party.
