Info | Newcomb was a successful fire extinguisher salesman who ran for Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court in 1974. He did not have a college degree but believed that God called him to run for Chief Justice. He won the primary but lost the general election of 1974 to Susie Sharp. After her retirement, Sharp spearheaded a constitutional amendment that required judicial positions be filled by an attorney; unsuccessful bills of this nature had been called the Newcomb Bill. Newcomb died in 11/1981.
