InfoCynthia Rodríguez Matthews

I am a native Californian born in 1963 in San Bernardino. In the 1970s, I moved with my family to Alaska where I lived until the age of sixteen. In Alaska I learned the importance of preserving our natural resources for future generations and respecting the Native American people.

At age sixteen, I moved to Kona, Hawaii, where I lived and attended a Christian missionary school for one year. While living at the missionary, I lived with many people from many different countries and economic backgrounds. One of the most important lessons I learned was that it did not matter where a person was from in this world, or where a persons ethnicity and cultural background derived: what mattered most was our connection in common interests and needs.

I graduated from high school at seventeen, and in the 1980s began working with the Operating Engineers, local 12, as a heavy equipment operator.

In the 1990s I expanded my career to include Environmental Safety and Remediation and was responsible for testing soils and water at construction sites as well as monitoring safe clean-up of contaminated materials. It was here that I became aware of the vast pollution problems our state is facing, and the efforts to clean our water and improve our air quality, which are of the utmost importance.

In 2000, I returned to school to complete my education. While in college I served in student government as an Environmental Senator and have continued since to work diligently within my community to aid in the improvement of our environment, labor issues, and international relations. I am actively involved in community organizations and currently serve on the board of Peace with Justice of the Pomona Valley. I have organized and chaired community groups for political candidates, and I am an active member of several Democratic clubs. My BA (pending completion of senior paper) is in Environmental Management, and my area of emphasis is in ground water contamination in the San Gabriel Valley.
I am presently a graduate student at the University of La Verne, La Verne California completing my area of emphasis in International Business Administration.

I have traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Mexico (northern and central). My education, and multicultural experiences I have gained through international travel and environmental and international business education have given me insight to our current national needs and common goals for a cleaner environment, and to international concerns for improved relations: peaceful resolutions that will ensure our troops return home safely without relinquishing our freedom as Americans or leaving us open for terrorist attacks.

As a United States Representative for the 26th Congressional District, I will fight for the protection and constitutional rights of every American. I will diligently work towards peaceful resolutions without endangering the lives of our troops and fellow Americans, while working to improve Veterans benefits and job security. I will fight to protect our labor related issues such as health care benefits, living wages, and retirement. I will support environmental conservation efforts to preserve our natural resources and fight for our childrens right to quality education. I will defend a womans right to choose. I will protect rights for gays, lesbians, transgender, transsexual and bisexual persons. I will protect the rights of handicap persons. I will protect senior citizens right to access adequate and quality health care, which is of the utmost importance.

The beauty of this nation lies with its diversity of people in its kaleidoscope of ethnicities, creeds, and colors. I will defend and protect the inalienable rights of all.
