InfoA successful small businessman, public servant, community leader, champion for tourism, a friend to workers, seniors, fishermen and shrimpers, farmers and families in the 3rd Congressional District of Louisiana - that's Charlie Melancon. Melancon has worked for years to protect jobs, create new jobs and to lay the foundation for more economic development in this district. Charlie Melancon knows economic development and agriculture. Melancon's experience includes work with or in all of the industries that make the 3rd district economy tick - sugar cane farming and agriculture, shrimping, fishing, the oil, gas and chemical industries. He understands the link between the success of these industries and thriving small businesses. Melacon has sugar in his blood. The third child of Brownie and Joe Melancon, Melancon's family roots in the Louisiana sugar industry began in St. Martinville where his great grandfather, grandfather and uncle were sugarcane farmers. His great-grandfather on his mother's side was also a cane farmer in Assumption Parish. His father, Joe, was general manager of Glenwood Cooperative in Napoleonville. Growing up Melancon learned the values of faith and hard work. Charlie Melancon earned his degree in agri-business from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. A small businessman, he owned and operated Melancon Insurance Agency and Baskin-Robbins franchise stores. He worked to bring industry to this region and improve infrastructure while director of the South Central Planning and Development Commission. Melancon said that his approach to public service is: "If you can't do something say so. But if you say you can, then do everything in your power to live up to your word." Melancon was successful in a special election for the State House in 1987, and won two subsequent elections. As a state representative, he championed his district, helping to secure millions of dollars and new jobs for ports, hurricane relief, flood control, sewer systems, fire protection, gas line renovations and roads. He worked to give cost of living increases to senior citizen services, and to attract more tourism to Louisiana. During his tenure as a House member, he was named Outstanding Legislator by the Louisiana Municipal Association and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Louisiana Restaurant Association in 1990. He was the author of legislation establishing the Louisiana Tourism Taxing District that developed and funded advertising strategy for Louisiana tourism, and to this day, sustains Louisiana's ability to advertise and promote itself nationally and internationally. Recognizing the need for stable markets for workers' compensation insurance, he also authored and co-authored bills setting up the Louisiana Workers' Compensation Corporation. For eleven years (1993-2004) as president of the American Sugar Cane League, Charlie Melancon fought at the federal level for the 27,000 jobs and $2 billion Louisiana sugar cane industry. He worked with Senators John Breaux and Mary Landrieu to make sure unfair foreign trade agreements didn't decimate south Louisiana's sugar economy. Melancon has served as chair of the LSU Ag Development Council and as vice chair of the South Louisiana Economic Council based in Thibodaux. He is a member of the Assumption Parish Farm Bureau. Charlie Melancon is a member of the UL-Lafayette Alumni Association, Ducks Unlimited, Kappa Sigma Alumni Association and Friends of Christ Church as well as many other civic and professional groups. Charlie and his wife, the former Peachy Clark, have been married for 31 years. They have two children, Charles Joseph (Seph), and Claire. Their daughter-in-law is Cheraine Blanchard Melancon.
