Info | Phil Bellfy, Ph.D., is an enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Minnesota Chippewas and teaches in the American Indian Studies Program at Michigan State University. He also teaches in MSUs first-year writing program through its Department of American Thought and Language.
Phils doctoral dissertation explored the relationship between Canada, the United States, and the Native people who live along the U.S./Canada border, especially those in the Lake Huron Borderlands. Early research for the dissertation uncovered the confusing and various ways that Native people (and places) of North America were identified. Indians and Other Misnomers grew out of that confusion and is designed to help the reader understand and identify the names of Native tribes and bands, Native individuals, and place names of Native origin throughout both Canada and the United States.
Phil lives in East Lansing, Michigan, and enjoys and maintains a 220 acre wildlife reserve in Michigans Upper Peninsula.
