| Info | About Joel Otto: Born in New Hampshire, then lived near Boston before moving to central Vermont. Finished High School in Vermont while spending summers with the Bread and Puppet Circus, and hiking in the Wind River range with my grandparents and cousins. High school activities included soccer, hockey, track, geology fieldwork, chess, drama, chorus, and debate.
After graduating took pilot training in Flagstaff, AZ, Fairfield, IA, and Montpelier, VT where I received my certificate. Enrolled at MIU in Fairfield, Iowa studying math, physics, and philosophy. Travelled to India and Nepal. Worked as a mechanic and carpenter. Travelled to Europe, Senegal, Egypt, Turkey, and the Caribbean.
Attended Vermont Technical College, graduating with high honors in mechanical engineering technology in 1988 and marrying my high school sweetheart the same year.
Worked in Florida on an aerospace composites manufacturing business before moving to a farm in Iowa and operating a machine shop. Successfully organized the community to block county zoning, replacing two of three county supervisors in the process.
Started a family in 1996 and had four children, born at home with a midwife. Having relatives from Wyoming and childhood memories of hiking, we moved to Lander in 1999, first to a house on the edge of town, then to a family ranch shared with my brother.
Grandson of Bill and Vieve Gore, founders of WL Gore & Associates. Have both liberal and conservative perspectives. Gore is a boss-free company organized cooperatively through a lattice structure.
Currently home schooling and managing the ranch and investments. Formerly involved with the Republican and Libertarian parties, member of the board of directors of the Wyoming Liberty Group, and the ranch is host to the Wyoming Liberty Fest.
