InfoThe 52-year old lives with his wife, Jeannette in Gulf Breeze, Santa Rosa County. The couple has five grown children and two grandchildrenall living in the area.

Their youngest daughter will graduate Pensacola Junior College this summer and join two older brothers already attending the University of West Florida.

Their oldest son owns a computer networking business and lives with his wife and two daughters near the Brieses home in Gulf Breeze.

Their oldest daughter, Maggy graduated in 2001 from the University of Minnesota law school, has a BA in Political Science and is Brieses campaign manager.

Jeannettes parents reside in Cantonment, FL.

Briese spent 12 years coaching all of his children in basketball, softball, and baseballcapping his career by going to the AAU National Championship, coaching two of his boys and their 17-and-under city league baseball team.

He is a student of politics and public policyan avocation stemming from Brieses selection to represent his high school at Boys State.

Military: In 1968, Briese left St. Johns University (MN) after his sophomore year, joining his twin brother and younger sister in volunteering for military service. (This followed the pattern set by Brieses father who escaped a German prisoner of war camp in WWII and his grandfather who served during WWI.) Briese volunteered for two tours in Vietnam, serving almost 18 months as a Chief Warrant Officer helicopter pilot. Five times decorated for heroism, Brieses awards include the Soldiers Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, and three Air Medals for Valor.

Business: Briese grew up in a family steel business and has pursued a varied career in government contracting, environmental control systems for electric utilities, safety systems for refineries, and market analysis. His career took him to 48 states, living for extended periods in six. (Briese has 30 years of real-world experience.)

After leaving the Army, Brieses return to college was interrupted by his fathers request for help in saving the family business.

He managed shipping of critical parts between Anchorage and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska during the construction of the Alaskan pipeline. (His on-the-ground experience in Alaska convinces him that the cost in dollars and environmental risk to build a natural gas pipeline is too high.)

Briese spent a dozen years in the construction business, managing government and commercial contracts from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to South Korea. His work took him inside military bases, electric generating plants, and oil refineries in 48 states. (This experience gives him real-world insight into the challenges facing these installations in the 21st century.)

For the last 13 years, Briese has been a financial and agricultural market analyst, lectured nationally, and served as editor (with Jeannette as publisher) of several futures market advisory letters with an international readership. In a 1999 First Amendment lawsuit, he successfully challenged the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington D.C. Federal District Court, assuring unfettered public access to investment advice on the internet. (Briese believes that rising to defend individual rights under the Constitution is as important as standing to defend his nation under arms.)

As a contributor to the weekly The Real Paper in Pensacola, Briese has written a number of articles on local and national economics and politics. (He has been blunt in his public policy appraisals and unsparing in criticizing public servants who service special interests at the publics expense.)

Political: Briese was (until recently) a fifth-generation registered Republican. His great great grandfather was a founding delegate to the first Republican convention in 1856. Disenchanted with the Republican Partys good ol boy network and shameful environmental record, Briese left the Republican fold and switched his registration to Democrat on May 29 to run for Congress from Floridas first district in the 2001 special election.

Brieses priorities include protecting area military bases against future downsizing, additional investment in military pay, spare parts, and training; and pushing for permanent medical insurance benefits for retired military families.

Briese doesnt think we need more "studies" to tell us local Super Fund sites and industrial polluters are endangering public health. Its time for remedies, not delays.

He decries the environmental and economic risks of President Bushs energy policy. He believes proven alternate energy sources can make the U.S. energy independent, and can be developed more economically than drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.

Briese remains a conservative on fiscal policy and opposes leaving trillions of dollars in national debt to his children and grandchildren. He wants to see Social Security and Medicare put on firm financial footing.
