InfoU.S. Senator Patty Murray - working mother, educator, local school board president and state legislator - was first elected in 1992 to represent the interests and values of the people of Washington state. She was reelected in 1998 by a wide margin. Senator Murray is recognized for her common-sense approach and her dedication to the concerns of working families.

In 1980, Murray served as a parent volunteer for the Shoreline Community Cooperative School. When the state legislature cut funding for parent-child education programs, Murray went to Olympia to lobby against the cuts. One legislator told her she could not make a difference because she was "just a mom in tennis shoes." The grassroots campaign she subsequently organized successfully saved the program, and galvanized her commitment to fight for things in which she believed.

Born in Bothell on October 11, 1950, Patty Murray is one of seven children. Murray was educated in the public schools of Bothell and she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington State University. She is married to Rob Murray and they have two grown children - Randy and Sara.
