Info | Walt is father, husband, scientist, attorney, and committed citizen activist.
Walt is the son of a school teacher and small businessman. His father was an accountant who owned his own firm. Growing up, Walt worked in his father's office and picked up fiscally conservative values that he will bring to the mayor's office.
Walt has a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Texas and James Madison University, respectively. Walt also graduated from University of Arizona Law School. Prior to attending law school, he worked as an engineer for Lockheed Martin. Currently, Walt works as an intellectual property attorney at Bryan Cave. There, he works with innovators, creators, and entrepreneurs to solve problems and protect their inventions and other property.
Walt is also a leader in the conservative movement in Arizona. He serves on the executive board of the Arizona Right to Life and co-founded Arizona Republican Attorney Association with Phoenix Councilman Bill Gates. Walt has also been active in fighting for lower taxes and against corporate welfare. In 2007, Walt chaired the "No New Sales Tax for Glendale" campaign, a grassroots effort to oppose Glendale's ballot initiative to raise the City's sales tax. In addition to professional and political involvement, he has been actively involved in charitable groups including the 20-30 club and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Walt is married to Jennifer Opaska, an Arizona native. They have a 4 year old daughter, Avery.
