Info | Moses W. Harrison II was born in Collinsville on March 30,1932, and was educated in the Collinsville public school system. He received a B.A. degree from Colorado College in 1954 and a law degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, MO, in 1958. Chief Justice Harrison practiced law in East St. Louis and Collinsville and was senior partner in the law firm of Harrison, Rarick and Cadagin in Collinsville. While practicing law, he was elected to the Board of Governors of the Illinois State Bar Association and as president of the Madison County Bar Association. He also served on the city council and was finance commissioner of the City of Collinsville. On Sept. 4, 1973, Chief Justice Harrison was appointed Circuit Judge by the Illinois Supreme Court and was elected to that position in 1974. He served two terms as Chief Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit after having previously been assigned to the Felony Division and Major Civil Division of the Circuit Court of Madison County. In 1979, Chief Justice Harrison was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to the Illinois Appellate Court, Fifth District, in Mt. Vernon. He was elected as an Appellate Judge in 1980 and was retained by the voters in 1990. During his service on the Appellate Court, he served two terms as Presiding Judge (Chief Judge) of the Fifth District. He was elected to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1992. He was named Chief Justice beginning January 1, 2000. He retired from the high court on September 5, 2002. Chief Justice Harrison is a member of the Illinois, Metropolitan, Tri-City, Madison County and American Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society, Justinian Society of Lawyers, and the Illinois Judges' Association. He is former chairman of the Illinois Courts Commission.
