InfoRaymond Delmond Smith is a pensioner who lives at the Hotel Lodi. He made his living building fences and doing custodial work. Oh, and in case you haven’t heard, Mr. Smith wants to go to Washington. In fact, he wants to be president.

Smith, 74, is an official write-in candidate running for the American Independent Party nomination, and he believes a fresh perspective is badly needed.

“Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing. Neither did the last few presidents,” he said. “I want to shake things up.”

Smith’s biggest goal: Develop and use domestic gas and stop relying on Middle Eastern oil.

“We built Saudi Arabia’s oil system and now they want to kick us out. We have oil in Alaska. Let’s bring it on in,” he said.

Originally from Wisconsin, Smith held various factory and construction jobs. He settled in Lodi about 12 years ago to be closer to his family.

If elected, Smith would model his presidency after that of Harry S. Truman.

“He meant what he said and said what he meant,” Smith said.

Smith stopped by the News-Sentinel to announce his candidacy and drop off campaign flyers. He said he even has a campaign manager.

In fact, Smith is duly qualified to be president: He is a native-born U.S. citizen who is over the age of 35 and has lived in the country for more than 14 years. He has also filed the necessary, fairly routine, paperwork with county and state election officials.

He is hoping this low-percentage candidacy might catch the eye of a Leno or Letterman and give him a broader audience.

Asked what he would change about the Oval Office, Smith pondered for a moment.

“Well, I wouldn’t make it square,” he said. “I would leave it oval.”
