| Info | Paul DeVillers was first elected to the House of Commons on October 25, 1993, and re-elected for a third term on November 27, 2000.
On January 15, 2002, he was appointed Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) and Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.
On November 3, 1999, Mr. DeVillers was elected Chair of the National Liberal Caucus by his House of Commons and Senate colleagues. He served in this capacity until his appointment to Cabinet.
In February 1996, he was named Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Stephane Dion, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. He was re-appointed to this position in July 1997.
Mr. DeVillers has served both as a former chair and a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, as the chair of the Justice sub-Committee that reviewed the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, and as chair of the Justice sub-Committee on organized crime.
He is a past member of three other parliamentary committees: Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development; Environment; and Scrutiny of Regulations.
Prior to being elected, Mr. DeVillers was well known in the riding as a lawyer, with 20 years specializing in municipal law. He has also been active in local charities, most notably the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research and the Rosewood Shelter for Women.
Mr. DeVillers and his wife Nancy have three children.
