InfoIncumbent MP John Cannis is once again the Liberal candidate for Scarborough Centre.

First elected to the House of Commons in 1993 Mr. Cannis was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004. He currently serves as Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs, in addition to serving as the Chair of the Subcommittee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
He has also served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and as Vice-Chair on the Standing Committee on Transport.

As Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Cannis successfully guided four pieces of legislation through the House of Commons and Committee stages – the Privacy Act, the Space Agency Act, the Canadian Tourism Commission Act and the Patent Act.

In the most recent session of Parliament, Mr. Cannis was a member of the Canada-U.S. Parliamentary Association, Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association, Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, Parliamentary Network for Nuclear Disarmament, Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Canada-Cuba Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Mr. Cannis has also participated in various trade and NATO delegations representing Canada to Belgium, New York, Greece and Taiwan.

Prior to entering political life, Mr. Cannis owned a Toronto-based international executive search firm and was a member in good standing of A.P.P.A.C (Association of Professional Placement Agencies and Consultants). He also served as a computer and human resource consultant.

Raised and educated in Toronto, Mr. Cannis and his wife of thirty years have three children, Irene, Paul, Daniel, and grandson, George.
