InfoI am Shanti Gandhi, running for the Kansas State House of Representatives from District 52.

Until recently, I was in the practice of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in Topeka Ks., at Stormont-Vail Hospital. I retired in December of 2010.

I came to the United States in 1967, as a recent medical graduate from University of Bombay, Grant Medical College. I had developed interest in Cardiac Surgery and found an opportunity to come to the USA. A hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, offered me an internship position, and my father encouraged me to take it. My parents were not rich by any means, and I wasn't either. Fortunately the hospital agreed to loan me the airfare, and that is how I landed in the USA. It was my first flight.

At that time, heart surgery was in its infancy and several of my colleagues advised me that there was ‘no future in the field of heart surgery’ and that I would be ‘spending many years of my life in training’. They were half right, I did spend many years.

I met my wife Susan who was an RN, in Youngstown, Ohio, and we were married in 1969. Three of my daughters were born in Michigan, while I was in training there. Six years later I completed my training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Wayne State University, in Michigan. During those six years my annual salary went up from approximately $5000 to $8000 in the final year. We managed to live within our means and paid the taxes too. Yes, it is possible to balance the budget when it is your own money. Millions of households do it everyday throughout our country.

Subsequently I passed the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, became a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, and also became a naturalized citizen, in 1975. I was ready for Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness as promised in our Declaration of Independence. I have been a Republican ever since.

I practised in Youngstown, Ohio, for three years, and then, in 1978, I was invited by St. Francis Hospital to start a heart surgery program in Topeka. After a grueling initial period of trials and tribulation of local politics, we were able to establish a successful program.

My wife and I have been active in Kansas politics since the 1980s when President Reagan visited Topeka to campaign for the Republican candidate Sam Hardage for Governor.

I have also served on the Board of Trustees of Baker University and the Brown Foundation.

Why am I running for political office?

I have always been interested in politics, and have been passionate about many issues that seriously affect our daily life but never had the time nor the opportunity do anything about it. Now I have both. I am retired, and have the opportunity, to run for the Kansas House of Representatives from district 52. I am a lot wiser too. I will try hard to see that we keep ourselves on the right path, fiscally and morally. There is no substitute for common sense.
