| Info | Demetrios Giannaros was first elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1994 and has served as State Representative since then. Before coming to the legislature, he was elected to the Farmington Board of Education.
Since his election, Rep. Giannaros has been a vocal leader for policies that improve economic growth, job stability, quality education, health care, the environment and overall quality of life. Rep. Giannaros has fought hard to protect our seniors, our children and those that need our assistance.
Rep. Giannaros received his Ph.D. in Economics, MA in Development Economics and an MA in Political Economy at Boston University. After graduation, he joined the faculty at the Barney School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Hartford where he continues to teach. He has also taught at Boston University, Suffolk University, and Jagiellonian University in Poland.
In the legislature, Rep. Giannaros currently serves as Chairman of the Energy & Technology Committee, as a member of the Education Committee and the Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee. Rep. Giannaros has also served as Vice-Chair of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee and on the Connecticut State Tax Commission, International Trade Commission, Project Concern Task Force and the General Assembly?s Clean Air Group.
At the University of Hartford, Rep. Giannaros was Director of International Studies/Associate to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of the Executive Masters in Public Administration Program. As Director of this last program, he was responsible for teaching and training many state and local government employees from across the state. In 1997-1998, Rep. Giannaros was a Visiting Faculty Fellow at Yale University.
Demetrios Giannaros is a recipient of the prestigious American Council on Education Fellowship (ACE Fellow). This is a highly competitive fellowship given to select educators from around the country for their significant contribution to education and their promise as future leaders. During his stay in DC, he worked on international education policy and served as Special Assistant to the President of The George Washington University concentrating on administration and budgets.
Between 1993-98, Rep. Giannaros was Director of the U.S. Consortium for Management Education in Central and Eastern Europe ? a special cooperative project comprised of Columbia University, University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Boston University, under the leadership of the University of Hartford. The goal of this project was to train professors and executives in former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe for the transition to free market economies and to assist in establishing western-style business schools at these countries? universities.
Rep. Giannaros is a well-respected economist. He lectures and makes presentations on economic, business, and public policy issues locally, nationally and internationally. He has published extensively in professional economic journals such as Global Business and Economic Review, The Journal of Economic Development, Monthly Labor Review, International Economic Journal, The Journal of Economics, The Journal of Macroeconomics, among others. His article, "Budget Deficit Debate, A Review of the Recent Empirical Studies," co-authored with Dr. Bharat Kolluri, was cited twice (January 1987 and January 1989) by the Congressional Budget Office in its report to the U.S. Congress. His research findings have been cited worldwide.
An active member of his community, Rep. Giannaros is a member of local organizations such as The Hill-Stead Museum, the Stanley-Whitman Museum, the Unionville Museum, Hellenic Society "Paideia" of Connecticut, the Farmington Land Trust and the Exchange Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of the College of Southeastern Europe and has served as President of the Northeast Business and Economics Association. Recently, he was elected as President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Union, an association of elected officials from around the globe.
Rep. Giannaros, his wife, Elizabeth Sampson Giannaros, and their two sons have lived in Farmington since 1982.
