InfoMichael was raised just outside of Fergus, Wellington County, where his family continues to reside.

Michael started his career in the information technology sector, working at Barclays Bank and Research Capital Corporation. Prior to being elected Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills, Michael worked as Chief Information Officer for the National Hockey League Players’ Association, and acted as a senior technology advisor at the GTAA for the redevelopment of Pearson International Airport.

Michael’s involvement also extends to his volunteer and advocacy work. In 1997, he co-founded The Dominion Institute, an organization committed to raising awareness of our history and civics among Canadians. As a result of Michael’s input and direction, the Dominion Institute works closely with the Government of Ontario and the Royal Canadian Legion to improve the way history is taught in schools. The Institute runs a program centred on Remembrance Week, "The Memory Project", which brings veterans, teachers and youth together to explore the wartime experiences of generations past. Michael currently sits on the Institute’s Board of Governors. Michael has also assisted Groves Memorial Community Hospital with its Capital Campaign, and currently sits on the board of the Elora Festival and Elora Festival Singers, as well as the on the Corporation of Trinity College, University of Toronto.

Michael was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and was immediately appointed to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology. This committee has oversight for the Department of Industry and the Department of Natural Resources, as well as for the regulatory and economic framework of the Canadian economy.

Michael is a conservative who believes in fiscal responsibility, while at the same time acknowledging that a good society takes care of its most vulnerable. His time in the private sector has shown him the value of a dollar, and his community involvement has shown him that those who get involved can improve their communities. He believes that the country needs a new national vision, one that will see Canada once again position itself as a player in the world and one that will bring government with integrity to Ottawa. It is Michael’s firm belief that Canada is more than the sum of its parts and that it is the responsibility of national government to articulate a common identity that resonates with all Canadians. Michael’s experiences and belief in public service have led him to serve the people of Wellington-Halton Hills.
