InfoBrittany Pettersen was first elected in 2012 to represent House District 28. In 2018, she was elected as a State Senator for District 22.

Sen. Pettersen is a fourth-generation Coloradan and has lived in Jefferson County nearly her entire life. Her parents weren’t around much when she was growing up, so she started working to support herself and her two younger brothers from the age of 12, cleaning houses, and taking odd jobs whenever they were available.

Before launching her campaign for House District 28 she worked for New Era Colorado, a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to engaging youth in government and politics, and for candidates and causes focusing on education, the environment, and renewable energy. She studied political science at Metro State University, earning her degree and becoming the first in her family to graduate from high school and college.

In the 2013 legislative session, Sen. Pettersen worked on issues of government transparency and accessibility, ensuring that tax dollars in our judicial system are spent efficiently and effectively. She was also proud to sponsor bills that created programs to ensure that kids who drop out of school get a second chance at a college education and that help students save for college so that they aren’t saddled with debt upon graduation.

During the 2014 legislative session Sen. Pettersen focused on helping Colorado’s students and working families. She sponsored bipartisan legislation to put $30 million into new tuition assistance programs to help more middle-class Colorado students go to college. She also sponsored two bills to help working families find quality affordable child care, while allowing parents to stay in the workforce and pursue a career.

In 2016, Sen. Pettersen helped pass bipartisan legislation to reduce state-mandated standardized testing in the K-12 system by nearly 40 hours. She also passed bills to reduce regulations on rural school districts and to review performance evaluation measures for alternative education campuses that teach many high-risk students. Both bills passed with bipartisan support.

Brittany is working hard to ensure that every Colorado kid has the opportunity to succeed, get a quality education, and learn the skills to compete for the jobs of the 21st century. She knows first-hand that a good education is the key to a fulfilling and productive life, and wants to make sure that when families work hard and play by the rules, they have a fair shot at the American Dream. Brittany will always fight hard for the hardworking families of Senate District 22.
