Attica is the Coordinator of Kentucky Jobs with Justice — the state-wide arm of the national coalition of community, faith, labor, progressive elected officials and student activists fighting for economic justice, global justice, health care, immigrant rights and workers rights. She is also an Adjunct Faculty member at Bellarmine University having recently taught a course on “Social Networking for Social Justice.”

In 2004, Attica participated in the first-ever leadership retreat for young women of color organizational directors sponsored by the National Women’s Alliance. In 2005, she was selected to serve as a Forum Fellow for the Courier-Journal and featured in “People to Watch” in Louisville Magazine. In 2006, Attica was featured in “The Climb” in Business First as a Greater Louisville young professional who is making a difference. In 2007, she was one of two recipients of a Respite Award from the National Organizers Alliance for more than five years of non-stop community organizing in Kentucky and Tennessee. From 2008 to 2009, she was a co-host on “The Streets Are Talking” on B96.5FM — Louisville’s station for hip hop and R&B – and provided regular commentary on “From the Corner to the Courthouse” on the sister station of 101.3FM. In 2010, she was recognized as a Connector by Leadership Louisville as a civic and non-profit community leader who is making a difference in our region. She was awarded the 2011 national “Woman of Vision” honor by the Ms. Foundation for Women.

For three years, Attica was Executive Director of The National Conference for Community and Justice (an organization that fights bias, bigotry and racism) in Knoxville, Tennessee. While there, Attica helped to create the Greater Knoxville Civil Liberties Alliance, implemented youth leadership initiatives, helped to create the LGBTQ Task Force and the Race Relations Center of East Tennessee, and helped to implement the first-ever National Conference on Dialogue and Deliberation.

During her tenure as staff at The University of Tennessee, she served as a grant reviewer for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and received a “Best Practices” Award for her outstanding achievement in building community-university partnerships through service-learning initiatives. At UT, she served as President of the Black Faculty and Staff Association and wrote a monthly column called “Color Conscious” for Metro Pulse (Knoxville’s weekly newsmagazine) exploring racial justice issues through the lens of a young woman of color.

Attica provides leadership to a number of non-profit Board of Directors including the CDC at her church (Greater Friendship Baptist Church), National Organizers Alliance (Secretary) and the Hispanic-Latino Coalition of Louisville. She previously served on the boards of the Democracy Resource Center, Knoxville Branch NAACP (Secretary), Community Shares of Tennessee (Vice President), Equality Coalition for Housing Opportunities, Center for Labor Education and Research Advisory Board at the University of Kentucky, YWCA of Greater Knoxville, Metropolitan Drug Commission and Knoxville Project Change.

As a budding author and editor, Attica has written “A Guide to Grassroots Political Campaigning,” papers on “How African American Activist Groups Use the Media” and “Including Minorities in the Decision-Making Process;” edited a “Grassroots Guide to Participatory Research” and contributes letters to the editor and op-eds to newspapers across the state of Kentucky.

She holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science from historically Black Knoxville College and a graduate degree in Communications from the University of Tennessee. Attica is a certified anti-racism trainer through Crossroads Ministry and the Commission on Religion in Appalachia. And she is the mother of Advocate and Ashanti.

Attica is a member of the Metro Council's labor and Economic Devlopment Committee and the Committee on Sustainability. She is Vice Chair of a newly created ad hoc committee to deal with the problem of abandoned and vacant properties.
