InfoDenelle Fedor was born in San Jose, CA. at Alexian Brothers Hospital in 1970. Denelle lived in the Almaden area for 20 years. She attended Vineland and Los Alamitos Elementary, Castillero Middle and Pioneer and Leland High Schools graduating in 1988. Denelle continued her education at West Valley College initially studying criminal justice before transferring to San Jose State University. She is one of the first in her family to graduate from a 4-year university graduating in 1996 with a BS degree in Political Science. She paid for her college education herself without monetary assistance from others by working at PW Supermarket over 30 hours a week.

Denelle Fedor has been actively involved with making positive changes in her community since being elected to the California State Student Association (CSSA) in 1994 while a student at San Jose State University. Denelle organized the “Get Out The Vote” campaign, achieving a 73% voter turnout – the highest turnout in over 10 years – which resulted in a freeze in student fees and no increase that year. She testified in Sacramento before numerous State Government Committees supporting education bills and attended and spoke at the California State University Board of Trustee bi-monthly meetings in Long Beach which resulted in ensuring that current policies were favorable for state college students. As a result of her advocacy, she was profiled in the college newspaper, the Spartan Daily.

Denelle has worked in private industry and public sector. Denelle worked for the former Bay Area Eternelle magazine whose target audience was women 35 years and older. Due to her strong belief in supporting women’s health, Denelle secured numerous sponsorships, including Birkenstock and Oracle, for Eternelle’s “Kiss Breast Cancer Goodbye” marathon and wellness event. Denelle also thrived when working with numerous small businesses at Insperity Corporation. Denelle’s ability to manage more than 120 accounts and genuine understanding of her clients’ needs resulted in increased sales for the company. As a result, Denelle received the Company’s Referral Award. This acknowledgement was a direct result of her ability to build strong and trustworthy relationships with professionals.

Denelle has dedicated most of her career to public service. She currently serves as Chief of Staff to Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio (District 6) and held that position for the last five years. Denelle also worked as an aide to former District 10 councilmember Pat Dando and for former Councilmember Ken Yeager. Denelle has consistently demonstrated her knowledge of the Councilmember position and her ability to work well with residents and develop policy that benefits the community and City overall. She is responsible for negotiating complicated land use, public safety, and budget issues with city staff, government agencies and the public.

Due to her ability and commitment to take thoughtful risks in helping to change the way the City currently (did) and does business, she was instrumental in preparing a memo in 2007 that proposed outsourcing park maintenance in the Rose Garden Park. This proposal would have saved the City money while improving the level of service to the City’s residents. Although the Council would ultimately vote down the memo, she encouraged and supported her boss for moving forward in order to challenge the status quo and plant the seeds for change. Four years later, the City is currently outsourcing park maintenance for pocket parks and all park bathrooms. This model can and should be applied to other non-core City services moving forward.

In 2010, Denelle assisted her boss in writing Measure W which provides voters the opportunity to support tier two pensions for the City. This measure passed with approximately 70% approval rating and saves the City money moving forward. Two tier pension systems are being adopted by many cities throughout the state. By saving money the San Jose can continue provide services to residents, quality healthcare for employees, and help lower and eliminate the budget deficit.

Denelle is currently an Executive Board member with the San Jose Police Foundation (SJPF) where she volunteers her time to Chair SJPF events and raise money for the police department. In 2005, Denelle and others started the Friends of the San Jose Mounted Unit, a non-profit, whose collective efforts are directly responsible for keeping this valuable community policing tool intact.

We are now in an era where budgets are tighter; resources are scarce and tough and important choices about services and our community need to be made. Denelle’s background and unique combination of professional experience in private industry and the public sector, in addition to her work in the community, unequivocally showcases her ability to be an effective leader for the District 10 councilmember position and for the City of San Jose.

Denelle Fedor has been a strong advocate for protecting services for San Jose residents. She has always put the people’s interests ahead of the special interests. She has demonstrated and understands the need for fiscal reform in order to protect services for the people. Denelle will be a leading advocate for taking the actions necessary to avoid service level insolvency and to begin restoring services to residents and taxpayers.
