InfoChristopher Rants was elected to the Iowa House in 1992 at the young age of 25. In 2002, he was elected Speaker of the House by his peers, in which capacity he served until January of 2007.

He was born on September 16, 1967 and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, to Marvin and Carolyn Rants. His parents were both educators, his father a principal in the Sioux City public school system, and his mother, Carolyn, at both Morningside College and Western Iowa Technical Community College. Christopher has one brother, who lives in Polk County.

Christopher grew up in Sioux City and attended the public school system. He graduated with honors from Sioux City North High School in 1986. In 1989, he graduated Cum Laude from Morningside College in Sioux City.

In 1992, he married his wife, Trudy, and together they have two daughters, Grace and Kait. Grace is in the 8th grade and Kait is in 5rd grade in the Sioux City Public Schools system. Christopher and his family attend Grace United Methodist Church in Morningside.

Christopher quickly ascended through the leadership ranks in the Iowa House. In 1999, he was elected Speaker Pro Tempore. From 1999 – 2002, he served as the House Majority Leader and following the November 2002 elections he was elected Speaker of the House by his peers. He presided as Speaker until the Democrats took control of the House in November 2006. Christopher served as the Minority floor leader for one term.

As the House Republican Leader, Christopher plans to continue his fight for lower taxes, improved education for our children, and continued business growth in Iowa. Since he was first elected in 1992, Christopher has been one of the most outspoken and enthusiastic supporters of tax cuts in the Iowa Legislature. He floor managed 1997’s 10% across-the-board income tax cut. Christopher believes Iowa’s tax structure is an impediment to investment, growth and the creation of wealth in our state.

As a father of two young daughters and a product of an elementary, secondary and college education in Iowa, Christopher believes in setting a high standard for students. He has not been afraid to challenge the education establishment with innovative ideas. Only by expecting more from our schools, teachers and students will Iowa lead the nation in education.

Christopher believes that to grow our state, Iowans must have access to and choice among providers of key commodities such as electricity, telecommunications, recreational opportunities and air transportation. Christopher believes Iowa must do more to compete for our most precious resource, our people.

Christopher will continue to fight for his vision of lower taxes, better schools and a higher quality of life for all Iowans.
