| Info | Sid Zeller was born in Wisconsin in May of 1965, raised in rural Iowa, and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and from Troy State University with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in management.
During high school Sid worked at Adventureland amusement park near Bondurant, IA and also worked for a landscaping company as a laborer.
During high school Sid was elected to be his class president his 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years. His senior year he was also elected to serve as the Student Council President. Sid was inducted into the National Honor Society as a sophomore and earned his Eagle Scout award in 1982.
Sidney Zeller enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in November, 1982 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol) in Sept 2010.
After graduation from US Marine Corps Recruit Training at San Diego he was enrolled in the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Marine-option on scholarship at the University of Colorado-Boulder. PFC Zeller left college after one year and joined the USMCR serving as a military policeman with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron Four in Aurora, Colorado aboard the Buckley Air National Guard Base. LCpl Zeller transferred to the 4th Force Reconnaissance Company detachment in Stead, NV near Reno. Later he joined the Nevada Army National Guard as a military policeman.
He was commissioned in December 1990 via the USMC Officer’s Candidate Class program. After graduation from The Basic School in June 1991 he was assigned as a platoon commander with 2d Radio Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In January 1992, 2ndLt Zeller attended signals intelligence MOS school – Navy Cryptologic Division Officers Course – at the Naval Security Station in Washington DC. After graduation from CDOC, 2ndLt Zeller was assigned as the Radio Reconnaissance Platoon Commander for fifteen months. Concurrently, Lt Zeller served as the OIC of JTF-129’s Radio Bn Det, as the Bn Parachute Operations Officer, and as the Bn Air Officer. 1stLt Zeller then served as the Company XO until his January 1993 unaccompanied transfer to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing to serve as the Signals Intelligence Officer for the G-2 in Okinawa, Japan.
In August 1995, he transferred to the Amphibious Warfare School as a student. Upon graduation, in June 1996, Captain Zeller assumed command of Company L, Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for two unaccompanied years.
In July 1998, Captain Zeller transferred to the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland and served two years as a watch stander and plank owner on the Military Support desk in the National Security Operations Center. The next two years at NSA were spent deploying to support exercises and special operations, including Operation Allied Force in Kosovo, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, numerous trips to Korea and others.
In July 2002, Major Zeller was pulled from combat service in Afghanistan for a hot fill at the Tactical Training and Exercise Control Group (TTECG) aboard the Marine Air Ground Combat Center serving in the MAGTF Training Command at Twentynine Palms, California, after attending the MAGTF Intelligence Officer Course at Damneck, Virginia enroute & serving as Class President & Leader.
Major Zeller served as Coyote 2, the TTECG intelligence trainer, for the legacy combined arms exercises (CAX) and several CAX follow-on programs, including the 30-day intelligence-driven, free-play, role-player assisted Exercise Mojave Viper – the capstone event in the USMC’s Operation Iraqi Freedom predeployment training program. During this four and one half year tour of duty, LtCol Zeller assisted in training over 100,000 Marines in 85 Marine battalions and several regimental staffs, deployed to Iraq for six months to train Iraqi Border Policemen, graduated from the USMC Command and Staff nonresident course, was promoted to LtCol and received the Marine Corps Intelligence Association Instructor of the Year award for 2006.
LtCol Zeller transferred to Marine Forces Europe for duty as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence (G-2) in July 2007 & retired in Sept 2010 after serving in many European & African countries. He assisted in building the military and national intelligence capabilities of several partner nations to enable them to fight terrorism, trafficking, piracy, and to protect their own borders without assistance from the US or other nations. LtCol Zeller led an intelligence assessment team of all services and intelligence civilians that deployed to Tbilisi, Georgia immediately after the Russian invasion of Georgia in August, 2008. Sid was also instrumental in establishing the first intelligence training school in the Republic of Georgia as well as establishing the first and largest ever multi-national European tactical intelligence seminar held in Romania. LtCol Zeller was a guest speaker at a similar intelligence seminar held in the Republic of Mali for several north and central African countries. LtCol Zeller represented the US European Command at the first ever graduation of a NATO Human Intelligence (HUMINT) course at the NATO HUMINT Center of Excellence in Oradea, Romania. LtCol Zeller also was a featured speaker at a massive intelligence seminar and exposition in Heidelberg, Germany.
Since retiring from active military service, Sid has continued serving his country as a Federal contractor employed by Innovative Reasoning, LLC at the US Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC) located near Bridgeport, CA, (30 miles from the NV border) as the Director of Exercise Control. He assists with training Marines to operate and conduct all six of the warfighting functions in complex, compartmentalized, mountainous, high-altitude terrain found in the Toiyabe National Forest. Expertise in mountain warfare is important to the National Security of our country because future wars will likely be fought in mountainous terrain. Sid has also served as the subject matter expert and lead trainer for an insurgent training course held at Ft Irwin, CA for US Army insurgent roleplayers.
LtCol Zeller has a Master’s of Public Administration degree from Troy State University and Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in psychology and anthropology from the University of Nevada-Reno.
