InfoJulie was born in Pocatello at the former Bannock Memorial Hospital, she grew up on a farm in the Rose/Rising River area, north of Blackfoot. She attended Groveland Elementary, Blackfoot Jr. High (Shilling Sixth Grade Center), and graduated in 1977 from Blackfoot High School. She attended post secondary school at College of Southern Idaho, and then to Idaho State University Technical School, receiving an associates degree.

Her father and mother, Masa and Midori Tsukamoto, were second generation Japanese Americans who broke their farm out of the sage brush in the Rising River area. Julie’s dad liked to tinker with his farm equipment to make it work more efficient and effective, one of his inventions, E-Z Tarp, an automatic device for trucks, can be seen frequently in Bingham County and nationally.

“My dad was a “joiner”, he was a member of the Japanese Americans Citizen League, the Potato Growers of Idaho, Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce, and he was a founding member, and served on the board of the Idaho Potato Museum.” Julie states, “he instilled in me the attribute of volunteering by enforcing the concept that, you can’t complain if you aren’t involved.”

Just like many residents of Bingham County, moving irrigation pipe, hoeing weeds in the potato fields and working in potato planting and harvesting were normal youth activities for Julie. She was involved with 4-H during her youth and when her own children were old enough she had them participate in the program, herself then taking on the role of leader and camp director.

Garth VanOrden, Julie’s husband, is a farmer at heart and an agri-businessman out of necessity. They own their farming operation, Garth VanOrden Farms, and are co-owners in Wada Farms Potatoes Inc., and members of Ull potato cooperative, which is part owner of Idahoan Foods. They own land in Rising River, Rockford and Pingree, and they lease ground in Pingree, Blackfoot, and on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.

Julie and Garth have four children, two daughter-in-laws and four grandchildren. Shaun, the oldest son, completed studies at ISU in December 2011 and will graduate in May 2012 with a degree in business. Dillon, their middle son, farms with his dad and has just started a partnership with their farm foreman called Winding River Farms. Jason, the youngest son, works on the farm. Lisa, the youngest child and only girl of the family (who is adopted from Vietnam), is a senior at Snake River High School. She will graduate in May 2012 with intentions of entering one of Idaho’s state universities.
