| Info | John Gannon has been a Boise Schools parent, Bench Neighborhood supporter and leader, and attorney since moving to the Boise Central Bench in 1976.
John advocated Bench school reinvestment for years – especially when several schools had school roof leaks that disrupted education in the 1990’s. In 1994 the State PTA gave John an “Outstanding Service Award”. In 2006 John was a co-organizer of “Neighborhood Schools Work” which kept Monroe, Washington and Pierce Park schools open when the district wanted to close them, and supported Bench reinvestment. Thereafter, he joined the Boise Districts School Facilities Steering Committee. He helped organize a legislative rally and appeared on Channel 7 KTVB saying “We need this school bond in order to have a quality neighborhood and a quality city we can be proud of.”
John Gannon gave Legislative testimony for local school district control and against the unfunded State mandates in the Luna laws. He pointed out a quality education gives our children a chance to succeed and attracts quality business and investment. On March 15, 2012, he testified at the House Education Committee against general fund payment of interest on Charter School bonds, stating “We cannot afford to start funding a second school system until the public school system is adequately funded.” Inadequate funding results in increased property taxes.
John Gannon began his neighborhood involvement in 1989 when, irritated with having to pay for water he couldn’t get, he was elected to the New York Irrigation District Board where he successfully worked to change district policies. He was an active supporter and later leader of his neighborhood association, where he worked on traffic issues and preservation of the quality of life on the Bench. He promoted quality reinvestment projects on Grover Street and supported Vista Village’s 4 million dollar transformation and its attractive separated sidewalks and landscaping. He helped reduce the Kootenai speed limit and advocated saving neighborhood historical features such as the Washerwoman on Vista. He served on the Boise Depot Vision Committee and the Infill Task Force.
John Gannon believes the legislature should be open to all. The legislature should print bills, have public hearings and debate all issues. He has testified several times at the Legislature regarding his belief that voting is a fundamental right and should be encouraged, not made difficult and uncomfortable by public political party registration and cumbersome voting regulations.
John Gannon has been a consistent advocate for our quality of life including sponsoring the Bluebird License Plate in the 1992 Legislature. In late 2011 when State Parks were on the chopping block, he organized a campaign “Keep Parks Open, Close Empty Mansion” and helped Representative Grant Burgoyne present a bill to do that.
John Gannon was born in Ross, California and graduated from UC Davis and Hastings College of the Law, University of California. He completed the USAR JAG school and served in the US Army Reserve mostly in a standby capacity. He has served as a Director of the New York Irrigation District, the Boise Project Board of Control, State Representative in the Idaho House from 1990-1992, coordinator of the Boise Fourth of July Parade and has been a member of many other community organizations.
