Enda has represented the people of Mayo as a Fine Gael member of D�il �ireann since 1975, and has served in a wide variety of positions during that time.

Enda served as Minister for Tourism and Trade from 1994-1997, overseeing an unprecedented growth in tourism business, and Ireland's trade position internationally. As Minister he also chaired the European Union Council of Trade Ministers during Ireland's Presidency, and he co-chaired the successful Singapore round of the World Trade Organisation talks in 1996.

With his colleague Richard Bruton TD, Enda negotiated, on behalf of Fine Gael, the Programme for Government with the Labour and Democratic Left parties prior to the formation of the Government in 1994.

He was Minister of State at the Department of Education & Labour from 1986-1987.

He has served as party spokesperson on Education, Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands, Western Development and Youth Affairs and Sport. Enda has served on many D�il Committees, including the Committees on Education and Science, Health and Children and the Irish Language.

In the mid-1980's, he was a member of the Fine Gael delegation on the New Ireland Forum and later served on the British Irish Parliamentary Association.

He chaired the Fine Gael Election Strategy Committee prior to the 1997 General Election which saw Fine Gael win nine extra seats. He was also secretary to the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party for many years. He was a member of Mayo County Council from 1975-1995 until his appointment to the Cabinet.
