InfoThaddeus G. "Thad" McCotter

Representative Thaddeus McCotter represents the 11th District of Michigan, a suburban district of Detroit that includes portions of Western Oakland and Western Wayne Counties. As a 30-year resident of Livonia, Thaddeus has represented portions of the 11th District for over a decade, first as a Schoolcraft Community College Trustee, a Wayne County Commissioner, a Michigan State Senator, and now as the District’s US Representative.

First elected in 2002 to Congress, then re-elected in 2004 and 2006 to Congress. Representative McCotter was elected by his colleagues in Nov. 2006 to serve as Chairman of the Republican House Policy Committee, a leadership position once held by Vice President Dick Cheney. Representative McCotter also serves on the House Financial Committee and is Vice Chairman of the Canadian Interparliamentary Exchange Committee. Thaddeus McCotter also served as an Assistant Majority Whip and served on the Committee on Small Business during the 108th and 109th Congress.

Representative McCotter has focused his efforts on preserving and promoting manufacturing and small businesses, because he knows they form the back bone of our community’s economy. He has steadfastly supported winning the War on Terror and increasing our homeland security; tirelessly fought to reduce taxes and the size and scope of government; and, most importantly, Representative McCotter has dedicated every effort to listen to and serve his constituents.

In the Michigan Senate, Thaddeus served as the Assistant Majority Floor Leader and earned a reputation as a tax-cutting, fiscal conservative. In 1999, the Senate Majority Leader appointed Thaddeus to chair the Senate Law Revision Task Force where his work helped to repeal over 50 arcane Michigan laws. Prior to becoming a State Senator, Thaddeus was elected in 1992 to the Wayne County Commission, where he was the driving force behind an amendment that required 2/3 of Commissioners to put a new tax on the ballot and 60% voter approval to pass the tax.

A Catholic Central High School (Redford, MI) graduate, Thaddeus was a first team All-Catholic football player. Thaddeus graduated summa cum laude with honors from the University of Detroit in 1987, where he later earned a law degree before being admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1991.

Thaddeus is married to Rita Michel, a registered nurse, and together they have two sons, George and Timothy, and one daughter, Emilia. Thaddeus and his family live in his home town of Livonia, but Thaddeus commutes to the nation’s Capital each week to serve the people of the 11th District.
