Info | ABDULKHAFIZ DZHALALOV (born June 1, 1947) - The head of the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan is little known in Uzbekistan, and is expected to show poorly in Sunday's vote. Western diplomats and political analysts have dismissed his candidacy as a sham aimed at giving the election a democratic gloss. Dzhalalov, also head of the Philosophy Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences, regards taking part in the ballot as more important than winning. Peppering his speech with references to Shakespeare, Voltaire and Mohammed, he told Reuters in a recent interview that he had similar aims to incumbent president Islam Karimov in promoting a developed, modern democratic state.
But the spiky-haired, droopy-eyed former lecturer and Communist party functionary also advocates more power sharing in Uzbekistan, including introducing elections for regional governors currently appointed by the president. Dzhalalov is married with four children.
