Info | Harry Mason Reid
From humble beginnings in the tiny town of Searchlight, Nevada to the second highest ranking Democrat in the United States Senate, Harry Reid has distinguished himself as a fighter for Nevadans and all American families in the corridors of power in Washington, DC.
Recognizing his trajectory in public service, the Las Vegas Sun said Reid "has gone from underdog to Senate's top dog." Parade Magazine, the nation's largest weekly identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington who possess "integrity and guts."
Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and an accomplished legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. After Nevadans sent Harry Reid to the Senate for a third term in 1998, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Assistant Democratic Leader, also known as the Democratic "Whip." Reid provides valuable leadership to the U.S. Senate by guiding legislation through the Senate and securing the votes to pass key measures. The respected Washington publication National Journal observed that "Senator Reid has quietly elevated a long dormant post."
Reid was born in the small rural mining town of Searchlight, raised in a small cabin without indoor plumbing, and attended a two-room elementary school. As a small boy he would accompany his father for long days deep underground in the mines. His father was a hardrock miner with an 8th grade education, and his mother never finished high school, yet the youngest of Harry and Inez Reid's four sons would go on to achieve the American dream.
Since Searchlight had no high school, Harry would board with local families during the school week while he attended Basic High School in Henderson. Before graduating, Reid met Landra Gould, who became his high-school sweetheart. He married Landra a few years later. After high school, the Henderson business community helped him pay for college, an act of generosity Harry Reid would work hard to repay in the coming years. He graduated from Utah State University in 1961 and went on to get a law degree from George Washington University. During these years as a law student, Harry Reid acquainted himself with Capitol Hill, working nights as a police officer to pay for school.
After completing law school, Harry Reid headed back to Henderson, where he would serve as the City Attorney, where he revised the city charter and worked on extending Henderson's boundaries by acquiring federal land. His outstanding record helped him win an election to the Nevada State Assembly in 1968, at the age of 28. The young Assemblyman introduced the first air pollution legislation in the state's history and worked on introducing laws to protect consumers. In 1970, at the age of 30, Harry Reid became the youngest Lieutenant Governor in Nevada history. In 1977, he was appointed Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission where, for five years, he made headlines for his legendary and relentless pursuit to clean up Nevada's gaming industry. By this time, the Reid family grew to five children; the oldest girl, Lana was followed by four boys, Rory, Leif, Josh, and Key.
After returning to his private practice for a few years, Reid won the first of two terms in the United States House of Representatives in 1983. In the House, he championed issues that were important to Nevadans and introduced the Taxpayer Bill of Rights as well as legislation to protect Nevada's wilderness.
