InfoMeyer R. "Mike" Licht

Mike R. Licht, CPA, was the twentieth Denver City Auditor. He was sworn into office on July 1, 1983; his term expired July 1, 1987. Born in Denver on May 23, 1931, Mr. Licht received his education through the Denver Public Schools, graduating from North High School in 1949. Following High School, he entered the military service and served four years from 1949-1953 in the United States Navy. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in the University of Denver receiving a degree in Business Administration in 1958. Continuing at the University, he graduated in 1962 with an BA in Accounting.
In 1958, Mr. Licht was appointed to his first position with the City as Chief Auditor of the Denver District Courts. He continued working there for seven years. In 1965, Mayor Tom Currigan named Mr. Licht as County Assessor in the Denver Department of Revenue. He remained in the Assessor's Office until 1973 when Mayor William McNichols, Jr. appointed him Director of Operations and Finance in the Department of Health and Hospitals.

In 1976 after several disagreements over the business practices at Denver General Hospital with the Manager of the Department of Health and Hospitals, Mr. Licht returned to his old job as County Assessor under a new title: The Deputy Manager of Revenue. In the early part of 1983, Mr. Licht decided to run for the Office of City Auditor. After a long campaign and the most closely contested race in Denver's history, Mike Licht was declared the winner by a margin of ninety-seven votes over the late Charles D. Byrne.

One of the many tasks Mike Licht performed as Auditor was that of auditing the concessionaires who do business with the City. As a result of the audits and the subsequent negotiations, the City received $6 million in improvements to Mile High Stadium and McNichols Arena.

Mr. Licht's professional designations included membership in the American Society of Appraisers (1972), serving as President in 1982, and CPA (1979). He was appointed to the Denver Health Insurance Committee in 1968, serving as Chairman from 1968-1975; to the Denver Metro Sewer District as a board member in 1970; and to the Advisory Committee on Governmental Accounting for the State of Colorado as a board member in 1983. Mr. Licht was also a member of several organizations including the Colorado Association of Assessors, serving as president in 1972; the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants; the International Association of Assessing Officers; the Fair Labor Standards Committee; and the El Jebel Temple of the Shrine.

Mr. Licht and his wife, Donna, have five children, all of whom were born and raised in Denver.
