Info | Judy Wasylycia-Leis (pronounced Was-a-lisha-lease), the Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North, graduated with a Masters degree in Political Science from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1976, when she began her career working in the House of Commons as a Parliamentary Intern. She has worked as executive assistant to Federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent and for Premier Howard Pawley, both as co-ordinator of the Premier`s Secretariat and of the Executive Council policy group. Previous to that she served as the Women`s Organizer for the federal NDP. Prior to running for office, she worked as the co-ordinator of the Women’s Directorate in the Manitoba government.
She was first elected in 1986 as the MLA for the constituency of St. Johns and re-elected in the general elections of 1988 and 1990. In April 1986, she was appointed to provincial Cabinet, where she served as Minister of Culture, Heritage and Recreation, with responsibility for the Manitoba Lotteries Foundation and the Status of Women. In 1988 she became the NDP critic for Family Services and the Status of Women. After the 1990 election, she served as the NDP Health Critic and NDP Deputy Leader before resigning as an MLA to run in the 1993 Federal election.
She is former Co-Chair of Cho!ces, Manitoba's social justice coalition, and has been active with various community organizations including L.I.T.E. (Local Investment Towards Employment), the Coalition for Children To Live in the Community, the Manitoba Coalition to Save Home Care, and the Medicare Alert Coalition.
She was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997 and re-elected in 2000 and 2004. Ms. Wasylycia-Leis was recently chosen as Chair of the federal NDP Caucus. In Judy’s capacity as a Member of Parliament she has served as the federal NDP spokesperson for Health, Immigration and Status of Women. She is currently the federal NDP spokesperson for Finance, Financial Institutions, Pensions, and Revenue Canada, serves on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance, and is the Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on the Scrutiny of Regulations.
Judy and her husband, Ron, have two sons, Joe and Nick. They live in the riding of Winnipeg North.
