InfoGene Balfour has been a resident of Thornhill since 1992. A university graduate and businessman, Gene has enjoyed a successful career in the computer industry beginning with employment as a Systems Engineer in the late 70s with IBM Canada followed by 28 years in the IT Personnel Staffing business earning a living under a 100% commission compensation plan, and culminating with his current position as Director, Talent Supply Chain for a thriving Canadian business transformation consulting company. Since 1981, Gene has provided professional staffing and consulting services to organizations that have been large and small, public and private, local and international, entrepreneurial and bureaucratic.
Why Are You Running?:

Happily married and having successfully raised two wonderful daughters, Gene has shared interests and concerns common to most Thornhill residents: a healthy economy that can sustain stable employment in order to support his family; a good education for his girls; timely access to health care services; a police force that respects the rights and interests of the citizens it serves; and a continuing improvement in the quality of life for which we all strive. With these objectives in mind, Gene has grown steadily more concerned about the excessive role of governments and the adverse effects that they impose on average citizens in their efforts to navigate the challenges of daily life. While assessing his ballot options at the voters' station in the last provincial election, it was clear that the only option for which he could vote in good conscience was for less government - yet this option did not exist! Within a few weeks, Gene discovered the existence of the Ontario Libertarian Party and vowed to become the "less government" option for all citizens of Thornhill. Gene has come to believe that no Canadian can claim to live in a true democracy until the choice of smaller government, fewer regulations and lower taxes is a ballot option in all elections. Gene invites all those Thornhill citizens who desire a "voice for less" at Queens Park to vote for him on October 6.

Limited Government
Issue Details:
Over the past 50 years, Ontario has increasingly embraced a culture of Government Reliance that has been won by the political class at the expense of Freedom and Self-Reliance for all citizens. The resulting high taxes, “regulation overkill” and the economic distortions from government monopoly practices have created a society that features a type of "citizen slavery" perpetrated by increasing government control. I yearn for FREEDOM from state slavery, and if you stop to think about it, you probably want the same thing. What do Libertarians mean when we say that we are the ‘party of choice’ ? Its mainly about taxes , intrusive government bureaucracies and monopolies. For the first two, the logic is simply this: if you pay much less tax, you will have much more to spend to satisfy your own needs and priorities. This will also mean that you will become much less reliant on government programs, and so the need for big government will shrink. Monopolies are illegal in the private sector, yet they perfectly legal when government operates or sponsors them? We believe that this double standard should not exist. A Libertarian led government would privatize The Beer Store, all public Hydro operations , the LCBO, and the Ontario Lottery Corporation. In addition, we would strip away the monopoly powers of every public sector union in Ontario - the power to strike, for example; and the power to force new employees to join the union as a condition of employment. These monopoly powers, and the market distortion they produce to the detriment of so many citizens, are not compatible with our concept of a free and democratic society. Please go to [Link] for more details about my concerns about the status quo in the Ontario government.
