Why I Believe in Wind and Peace
Wind, peace and politics are in my bones. I was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota at a time when wind was still being used as an energy resource. George McGovern was the state's pre-eminent politician. McGovern's run for U.S. President in 1972 was an unequivical voice for peace - and my political coming of age. His pro-peace voice is one we so desperately want to hear from our Congress today. Thank you George McGovern for your work on bringing the Vietnam War to an end.
1977 - 1981
I attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and earned a B.A. in Political Science.
By 1981:
* wind power had long died,
* the Democrats were still just barely to the left of Richard Nixon, and
* Reagan had just became President and McGovern lost his Senate seat.
America's leaders had decided to beef up the military budget and the U.S. deficit. Sadly, our nation's priorities haven't changed much in 20 years.
My parents still live in South Dakota so it will always be a place of sunshine to me. I feel blessed to have grown up in such a beautiful place.
Wind
Our urban and rural areas need to reconnect as communities - economically, politically and socially. Wind is a great place to start as it offers us a point of discussion on community-based economics. The Twin Cities metro can transition its energy needs to the abundant resource of wind available right here in the Midwest.
Peace
George McGovern's 1972 Presidential candidacy helped get the Vietnam War shut down. I respect his integrity, moral convictions and commitment to We the People. His loss to Nixon taught me that the voice of progressive politics is critical for truthful political dialogue, especially when our nation is at war.
UWP: In 1981, together with 125 others from around the world, I traveled with "Up With People Cast C 1981." It makes for a very interesting little yahoo group - we truly have remained in community and are using the internet to better understand each other's feelings, concerns and daily lives. I continue to learn from the diversity of this rich political voice, with our cares and concerns for each other and our planet. This summer we're having our 25th reunion in Tucson.
MBA - International Management: Here my McGovern politics (B.A. - Augustana College) met the spread sheet (M.B.A. - Thunderbird). Thunderbird presented an interesting take on the relationship between capitalism and democracy. It seemed like most of the marketing classes were teaching us how to get people to abandon their rights as individuals to the needs of the corporations - consume, consume.
After graduating from Thunderbird, I lived and worked in Japan for 3 years - mostly in Tokyo. I was given a wonderful perspective on my own country while constantly learning from the beauty of the Japanese culture.
My time in Japan strengthened my belief that the rights of the individual must trump the rights of corporations. We as individuals need to challenge the dominance of the our massive global corporations. To do so is healthy for our financial freedom as well as our political freedom.
HIV: I was 32 when I found out that the HIV virus was in my body. The HIV in my system continues to be a teacher. I'm very grateful for my health, my yoga practice, and my access to health care. Thanks especially for the wisdom of my nation to fund Ryan White monies for those living with HIV and the fight against HIV.
As a nation we spend an obscene amount of money designing, building and deploying weapons of mass destruction. We must redirect those resources toward the true threat to this planet's security - the failing health of ourselves and of the environment in which we live.
1996 - 2002
The millenium change brought the birth of the internet and all her beautiful possibilities. The internet is such a reflection of what is great about mankind - our innovation, optimism, and the ability to create for the good of all.
I was living in San Francisco when the U.S. economy experienced a major earthquake - along the Enron fault. The quaked managed to steal $30,000,000,000 from the people of the State of California. This manufactured "energy-crisis" was one of several corporate manuevers that has brought this nation's economy to its knees. The worst of the corporate greed seems to be centered in energy and oil.
Then the 2000 election happened and damn near every Democrat let me know that my vote for Nader put George W. in the White House. I read Ralph Nader's "Crashing the Party" and took his advice. I ran for Congrees in 2002 as the Green Candidate in San Francisco. I received 10,000 votes, 6%, against Nancy Pelosi, House Leader of the Democratic Party. She still won't tell me why she voted for the Patriot Act.
I am happy to call Minnesota my home and to live in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. I moved back to Minneapolis still believing in the Constitution and the intentions of the Founding Fathers. They intended the House of Representatives to be a voice of the people - that includes being the voice that makes the decision of whether or not to take the nation to war.
2004
In 2004 I was Green Party Endorsed Candidate for Congress in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District. Running on a platform of wind, peace and single-payer, universal health care, I received 18,000 votes.
2005-2006
In 2005 I spent 6 months in Washington, DC observing Congress, especially Martin Sabo's work on the Appropriations Committee. Here are some of my observations.
In June, I returned to Minneapolis, and was Campaign Manager for Farheen Hakeem's run for Mayor of Minneapolis. I joined the Freedom Band, playing trumpet - we're really good! And I'm back to a disciplined yoga practice.
In May 2006 I received Green Party Endorsement for my candidacy for US Congress, in Minnesota's 5th district.
