| Info | Darrel Stinson, Member of Parliament for Okanagan Shuswap, is a product of the ranches and outdoor occupations typical of the region he represents in Interior British Columbia. He was born at Vancouver in 1945 and raised on ranches in the Aspen Grove and Deadman Creek areas. Leaving school at an early age, he also worked in the resource industries of forestry, hydro-electricity, and the Alberta “oil patch.”
However, his life-long attraction has been mining, from prospecting in the B.C. mountains to developing gold claims in northern Ontario as well as mining in the American states of Nevada and California. Mr. Stinson completed his Grade 12 as an adult and makes a point today of counseling young people to “Stay in school, don’t wait and go back when you are older than your teacher, like I did.” His small-business experience includes being a partner in a café and gas station at Falkland. Together with his wife of more than 30 years, Cicely, he operated a general store at Armstrong for five years. The couple still lives in rural Spallumcheen.
Since his first election to Parliament in 1993, his critic areas have included the Canada/U.S. Softwood Lumber Deal, small business, forestry, and mining. His other special interests include aboriginal affairs as well as prisons and parole. He was among the few MPs to actually visit the Nisga’a chiefs and territory before that treaty was signed, and the chiefs also visited him at Ottawa. He has spoken strongly against changing the traditional definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others and also opposes gay adoption.
Regarding Party changes, he has spoken against both the Reform Party move to the United Alternative and the Canadian Alliance joining with the Progressive Conservatives to form a new Conservative Party. However he has agreed to abide by the will of the majority.
