Mark Tunney has worked in the Hospitality and Tourism field since graduating from college in 1983. Currently the Director of Sales & Marketing at the Westin Hotel on Michigan Avenue, Tunney has a reputation as a sales leader, as he has successfully directed the sales and marketing efforts of four (4) of Chicago's largest Convention Hotels

Tunney began his career in San Diego at the Town & Country Hotel, after graduating from the University of San Diego. After working at what was than San Diego's largest convention hotel for 2 years Tunney moved on to the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau where he handled Corporate and Association meetings from all over the Country. Tunney was part of the SDCVB sales team that pre-sold the under construction San Diego Convention Center.

During his tenure at the San Diego Convention Bureau, Tunney became involved in the events and politics of the City. Beginning with his time at the Town & Country Hotel, Tunney became a part of and a leader in the San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce, at the time the preeminent young professional organization in the city. He became President in 1986 after serving on various committees as well as the board of directors.

Looking to expand his career in the hotel industry, Tunney moved to Chicago in 1989 when he was hired by Marriott Hotels as Director of National Accounts. During this time, Tunney achieved the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation, the first person within Marriott Hotels to do so. He has since been re-certified 2 other times.

He was promoted to Director of Sales at the Chicago Marriott Hotel in 1991 and led that sales effort through the 1992 recession. In addition to his duties at the Marriott, Tunney also served on various Marriott task forces, establishing some of MarriottĀ¹s best practices that are still in place today. Also during this time he earned his MBA from Loyola University.

In 1994 Tunney was promoted to Regional Director of National Account Sales in Washington DC, where he headed up the Industries Largest National Sales Office. During this time, Tunney took on leadership positions within industry organizations like ASAE and PCMA. In 1995 Tunney married Susanne Hardy, a resident of River Forest and a DePaul University graduate, she is the daughter of local businessman and DePaul University graduate William Hardy. Susanne's mother Jeanne Hardy is widely known for her work within various charitable organizations, including the Boards of Directors of Fenwick High School and Catholic Charities of Chicago.

After two years of leading the sales efforts in Washington DC, the Tunney's moved to California when he was promoted to Director of Sales & Marketing for the Anaheim Marriott Hotel. They moved back to Chicago in early 1998 when Tunney was offered the position of Director of Marketing for Hyatt Hotels flagship, the Hyatt Regency Chicago. They brought with them their first child, Madison.

Opportunity and the call to build a new company lured Tunney to the position of Vice President of Sales for Seminarsource.com, an Internet startup. During his time at Seminar Source, he oversaw the implementation and execution of the International Sales operation for 2SCOM. Through their remote offices in Chicago, Washington DC, Phoenix and San Diego the sales team presented solutions to various associations, corporations, and other organizations involved in distance learning.

In September of 2000, shortly after their second child was born, Tunney headed back to the Hotel side of the industry as Director of Sales and Marketing for the 1200 room Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. Within six months, the owners of the hotel purchased the Westin River North, and Tunney led the Sales, Catering and Convention Service Team through the complexing of the two hotels. In September of this past year, Starwood reorganized their entire company, and Tunney was asked to lead the Sales efforts at the Westin hotel on Michigan Avenue.

Tunney's current and past affiliations include: PCMA: Professional Convention Management Association (Chair of the Membership Committee for 2 * years); MPI: Meeting Professionals International; ASAE: American Society of Association Executives; ASTA: American Society of Travel Agents; IAEM: International Association of Exposition Managers and The Kiwanis Club of San Diego.

A native of California, Tunney is the son of former NFL referee Jim Tunney, a professional speaker and former Secondary school administrator, and Marie Picou Veit, a retired Librarian. The third of four children, Tunney has an older brother and sister and a younger sister. All of Tunney's siblings live in the western part of the U.S.
