Info | Growing up in Northwest Ohio, Jim Hoops has lived in Henry County his entire life. He was raised in Deshler and currently lives in Napoleon. He attended Patrick Henry High School, where he was recognized as an “All-State” basketball player in 1976 and 1977. After graduating from Northwest State University of Louisiana in 1981, Jim became an active member of Athletes in Action, a sports ministry basketball team affiliated with Campus Crusade for Christ. After entertaining their audience with a Globetrotter-like basketball game, Athletes in Action would talk with teenagers about the importance of embracing strong values and morals. In addition to playing on the team, Jim served as both the Public Relations Director and Fund Raiser for the organization.
Jim's Family
Jim and his wife Deb have been married for 16 years. Deb is an elementary school teacher and is proud to serve as her husband’s Education Policy Advisor, unofficially of course. Jim and Deb have a daughter, Erica, who is currently in her fourth year at The Ohio State University.
A Dedicated Public Servant
Before being elected as a State Representative in 1998, Jim served as the Henry County Auditor, where his many roles included Chief Fiscal Officer and accountant for all county- elected officials, as well as many of the county agencies. Jim shares your ideals of limiting government, lowering taxes and supporting strong family values.
When important decisions are made, Jim Hoops is in the room. He is a proven leader who has been entrusted with balancing the state’s budget. He served as Chairman of the Health and Human Services Subcommittee for the budget and made dramatic reforms in Medicaid, saving Ohio over $1.3 million. He moved to consolidate all Medicaid services, the state’s largest expense, by 2008, and incorporated a provision that will allow the State Auditor to conduct performance audits of Medicaid programs and providers in order to stop waste, fraud, and abuse.
Jim Hoops supported the tax reform package in the state budget, which included the largest personal tax decrease in state history - a 21% tax cut across the board. The reform, endorsed by such major businesses and industries as Whirlpool and Worthington Industries, simplifies and updates the tax code in an effort to keep more jobs and families in Ohio.
In May 2006, Jim Hoops will be running for the Ohio Senate, 1st District. As your State Senator, Jim Hoops will continue to fight for the Republican principles of a smaller government and fewer regulations.
